Plot Summary
Oscar winner Anna Magnani (The Rose Tattoo) stars as a screen-struck mother, convinced that her daughter’s star potential is her ticket to a better life, in a performance that Hollywood legend Bette Davis called “brilliant, uninhibited and full of volcanic, earthy power.” Risking everything in pursuit of her dream, Maddalena (Magnani) finally arranges a screen test for her child, only to realize the cruel reality beneath the shimmering veneer of the filmmaking industry.

Must See for All Serious Film Buffs
This movie is an authentic gem. The Magnani-Visconti collaboration is quite wonderful. The movie is wildly funny yet tears at your heart. Visconti manages to get a beautifully natural performance from the child who plays Magnani's daughter. Magnani exhibits her usual mastery. She was one of the great actresses of her generation and should be studied by anyone who takes acting seriously.
I agree with those who say "Two Women" would have benefited from her talents far more than those of Sophia Loren.
This film is a testament to that belief.
