Plot Summary
Johnny Depp, Mary Stuart Masterson and Aidan Quinn star in this wonderfully unique and delightfully offbeat romantic comedy. Joon (Masterson) sees the world in a way all her own. One night, while playing in a poker game with unusual stakes, Joon loses her hand...and wins Sam (Depp), a whimsical misfit who soon charms his way into her heart. With humor, warmth and an outstanding supporting cast that includes Oliver Platt and Julianne Moore, it’s a romance on the brink of reality.

Fresh: Mr. Depp may look nothing like Buster Keaton, but there are times when he genuinely seems to become the Great Stone Face, bringing Keaton's mannerisms sweetly and magically to life.
Rotten: The cast is defeated by a cloying Barry Berman script that Jeremiah Chechik directs with the same flair for the obvious he brought to National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.
Fresh: As the outsider who courts the mentally ill Mary Stuart Masterson, Johnny Depp renders a startling performance that elevates the romantic fable way above its writing and directing shortcomings; look for the young Julianne Moore in a small part.
Fresh: The movie suggests that love and magic can overcome madness, and for at least the length of the film I was prepared to accept that. Much of the credit for that goes to Depp...

"A movie of the brink of reality..."
I have never seen a movie like this. It is warm, funny, and a messege to all girls and guys out there that they can find their Sam or Joon. The acting was outstanding; the actors seem to fit in each role, making it look and feel very real. Johnny Depp as Sam was the PERFECT; there could be no better person for the job. The message was lifelong; love is about being there for each other, not ditching when things hit rock bottom. The soundtrack was amazing; the opening song of the movie defiantly caught the mood of the movie. There are simply no words to discribe the feeling you get after watching this movie.
One of my favorite "feel good" films
This movie is touching and sweet, without being completely canned. Beautiful story, great acting, and a movie I come back to time and again when I just need to smile from my toes on up. One of my favorite Depp roles--and that's saying something! Highly recommend it.
love it
this is by far one of the best movies ever released. i love how sam kind of falls into benny and joon's life and both joon and sam fall for each other. a similar situation happened to me almost 3 years ago and him and i are still going strong. its a perfect love story movie. deff. 5 stars
