Plot Summary

Out of allegiance to the King Hrothgar, the much respected Lord of the Danes, Beowulf leads a troop of warriors across the sea to rid a village of the marauding troll Grendel. Grendel is not a creature of mythic powers, but one of flesh and blood, driven by a vengeance from being wronged. A loyal soldier, Beowulf finds that his willingness to kill on behalf of Hrothgar wavers when it becomes clear that the King is responsible for the troll's rampages. A story of blood and sweat, Beowulf & Grendel strips away the mask of the hero-myth, leaving a raw and tangled tale - one in which heads will roll.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: A more accurate title of this conceptually anemic if prettily mounted take on the Scandinavian epic might be Beowulf and the Vixen. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: A muscular, ardently naturalistic retelling of the ninth-century Anglo-Saxon saga. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Sep 7, 2011

Rotten: Icelandic-shot version of the legendary revenge saga is visually arresting and plausibly retrofitted for modern consumption, but lacks the savage bite that might have given the sixth century-set tale real impact. – Todd McCarthy, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Thus does Beowulf collide with postmodern punk sensibility. – Bill Gallo, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010
