Plot Summary

Better Than Something is an exciting and intimate portrait of Memphis-based punk musician Jay Reatard, who toured the world and released dozens of records over the course of a 15 year career that began in his mid-teens. Original and never-before-seen footage documents his self-made journey to iconic garage rock star, with colleagues, friends, and family speaking candidly about Jay's vibrant and complicated life. Jay Reatard himself - filmed just nine months before his untimely death at the age of twenty-nine - shares his experiences both on and off stage, with all the humor, savvy, and pathos one can expect from such a prolific and vital artist. Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: [The directors] cede narrative structure to their interview subjects, which may fulfill some goal of objectivity but cheats the viewer of depth or a clear point of view. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Mar 1, 2012

Fresh: Better Than Something: Jay Reatard offers an uncommonly intimate portrait of the prolific garage-punk phenom who died of a drug/alcohol cocktail in 2010. – Eddie Cockrell, Variety, Oct 12, 2012

Fresh: Like the longhair with the foghorn falsetto it's titled after, this unfussy rock-doc profile is shaggy, sophisticated, and more than a little sad. – Mark Holcomb, Village Voice, Feb 28, 2012

Fresh: Lindsey himself makes for a fairly outgoing interview subject, but the real attraction here is the dedication and care shown for him and his memory by the close-knit community of Memphis musicians and fans. – New York Magazine/Vulture, Oct 12, 2012

Really wish I knew of the movie and record combo before it sold out :/ , watch this movie if you're a fan of anything of his . Very good and pretty sad "yuh know" . Sad to see his future plans of becoming a Country singer fade away . R.I.P Jimmy

Sick Video - Check It Out!!

I've been so bummed since Jay checked out but this movie rocks! If you dig great indie rock n roll you will not be disappointed. Great live footage-the best thing since seeing Jay live but now this will have to do. The interviews are choice too, nobody is holding back. Very well done! I'm totally psyched!! Yeah Jay ROCKS!! Totally stoked about this!
