Plot Summary
In 2008, as George W. Bush tried to gift the energy and mining industries thousands of acres of pristine Utah wilderness via a widely disputed federal auction, college student Tim DeChristopher monkey-wrenched the process. Bidding $1.7 million, he won 22,000 acres with no intention to drill. For this astonishing (and successful) act of civil disobedience he was sentenced to two years in federal prison. Bidder 70 tells the story of this peaceful warrior whose willingness to sacrifice has ignited the climate justice movement.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: "Bidder 70," for all its clumsiness, nails the way that a spontaneous act of courage can focus the mind and clarify an ideology.
Fresh: Though viewers may already be aware of how DeChristopher's 2011 trial ended, the film maintains a gripping air of tension and mystery leading up to the verdict (he was sentenced to two years in federal prison for fraud but released after 21 months).
Fresh: DeChristopher's ability to move with intellectual seriousness and a light heart between festivals and courtrooms complicates the popular idea of The Man and what his brand of power can achieve.
Rotten: Seems designed primarily for teach-ins and rallies.
