Plot Summary

In an airport hotel on the outskirts of Paris, a Silicon Valley engineer (The Good Wife star Josh Charles) abruptly chucks his job, breaks things off with his wife, and holes up in his room. As fate draws him and a young French maid (Anais Demoustier) together, an audacious second-act surprise suddenly transforms César Award-winning director Pascale Ferran's (Lady Chatterley) dark-tinged fairy-tale into something altogether richer, more beguiling, and utterly astonishing.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Viewed from a certain angle, "Bird People" is a very sad movie. But it's also a lark. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Sep 11, 2014

Rotten: It's deliciously risky, though Ferran falls far short of Icarus' folly, soaring low and returning to earth having risked too little. – Peter Debruge, Variety, May 20, 2014

Fresh: An airport hotel may not seem the most inspiring of locations for a story of life-changing consequence, but French filmmaker Pascale Ferran's delicate, compassionate "Bird People" is just that sort of risk-taking existential adventure. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Sep 25, 2014

Rotten: An artful experiment that only half works. – David Denby, New Yorker, Sep 15, 2014

Poor writing and story structure, too long

This poorly written and badly edited film (scenes go on way too long) is only barely watchable because of the sweet acting of Demoustier. The gimmick of the hotel maid turning into a bird more than half way through the film could have made a very nice short film on it’s own. The rest could have been edited out.

well…half of the film is seen and told from a bird’s pov

I am not sure that it should be told from anything but the bird’s point of view. The actors are good. The story is fun and risky and doesn’t push itself far enough out to face real fears and go the distance. The film lacks the depth it needs to truly fly.

the bird people

Disappointing. the actors did a fine job but the film never got off the ground (no pun intended).
