Plot Summary

Academy Award-winning director Roman Polanski explores the sexy side of obsession and the wild side of romance in this outrageous look at the dark side of love. Starring Hugh Grant (About A Boy, Bridget Jones's Diary), Peter Coyote, Emmanuelle Seigner and Kristin Scott Thomas. A mild-mannered man (Hugh Grant) attempts to rekindle the sexual fire in his marriage while on a vacation cruise. The only problem is he falls in love with another woman. Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: This material obviously appeals to his sense of mischief, which remains alive and well. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Feb 19, 2010

Rotten: Strong playing by topliner Peter Coyote can't compensate for a script that's all over the map and a tone that veers from outre comedy to erotic game-playing. – Derek Elley, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Well, of course Bitter Moon is wretched excess. But Polanski directs it without compromise or apology. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: It's a matter of some dispute whether Roman Polanski's letter to the darker side of the romantic impulse, but there's little question that this is his most emotionally complex movie. – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Amazing film

Great performance by Hugh Grant. incredibly witty yet riveting film. very underrated, worth a watch

Atrocious

I don't normally give such harsh reviews, but I thought this was one of the most dire films I can remember. Polanski is capable of great movies -- even masterpieces -- but this was just horrific. A nonsensical script and wooden acting, especially by Coyote. Only KST comes out of this with any credit, probably because she had the least screen time. To be avoided. I'm amazed at the Rotten Tomatoes ratings.

(NB I comment as a huge 'Chinatown', 'Ghost Writer', and 'Rosemary's Baby' fan!)
