Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Sure, it's melodramatic and self-important, but Black swan is still a thing of rare terrifying, heartbreaking, surreal, monstrous and downright orgasmic beauty – Marc Fennell, Triple J, Mar 1, 2011

Fresh: Portman hasn't been this good since her early performances in The Professional and Heat, and is deservedly attracting intense Oscar buzz. Kunis brings to Lily a savvy sexiness, and Cassel is entertainingly smarmy. – Calvin Wilson, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Feb 25, 2011

Fresh: Despite its wildly over the top approach to creating tension, parts of it are genius. In fact I'm sure it's genius. But I will have to double check. – Gareth Simms, Platform, Jan 28, 2011

Fresh: Who can forget the delicate, beautiful and vulnerable features of Natalie Portman in the role of her life, as her prima ballerina Nina struggles with her dark side as she takes on her dream starring role as the Swan Queen. – Louise Keller, Urban Cinefile, Jan 21, 2011

Best Film a Have Seen in YEARS.

If there's any movie you should consider buying, its Black Swan withou a doubt. I saw this in theaters this past December and my mind was BLOWN. Never had I watched a more sophisticated, scary, psychotic, twisted, dark (the adjectives go on... you get the point though) movie. I really hope this wins an Oscar for best picture because this is just too good to be unoticed. Natalie Portman deserves best actress for her role in this film. She's just THAT good people. I have never seen an actor more dedicated to thier role, its just insane. You'll be on the edge of your seat throughout the entire movie. Bravo to Aronofsky and Portman for piecing together the best film of 2010. I can't really describe this gorgeous film in full detail, you just have to watch and see for yourself. You won't be dissapointed. A+

Breath Taking

I saw this in after new years and it deserves all the Oscar love it's been getting. This movie deserves to win over the social network or the kings speech.

I'm obsessed!

When I first saw trailers for this film in 2010, I was so excited for it's theatrical release. I made sure to see it on December 3rd even though I had to go by myself to a theater in Hollywood. I just couldn't wait another day, and the drive was worth it. This film exceeded my expectations, every scene capturing the central theme of contrast between black and white, purity and corruption.

Nina (Portman) is so obsessed with her performance that she'll do anything to achieve perfection. What she doesn't understand at first is that perfection isn't always about technique, but that it also involves "letting go" to achieve "transendence" as a performer. When another dancer (Kunis) comes along, Nina's darker side begins to come out and it eventually takes over until she becomes a completely different person. For her big debut, we see her final transformation into the Black Swan, and it is FANTASTIC.

The direction is wonderful, the way the camera moves with Portman is so fluid that you feel like you're on the stage with her. The acting is superb, not only from Natalie but from the entire cast, especially Barbara Hershey and Vincent Cassel. I was also impressed with Mila Kunis and glad to see that she could do well in a more serious role. And though few, Winona Ryder's moments in the film are excellent.

If I can see this movie five times (I have the ticket stubs to prove it), then I would hope that everyone who can appreciate a well made film can make time to see it at least once. You won't regret it.
