Plot Summary

Blue Vinyl, winner of the Excellence in Cenimatography Award at Sundance, is a deeply personal and vital exposé that has been applauded as “scary and hilarious” (Elvis Mitchell, The New York Times). Skeptical of her parents’ decision to “re-side” their home with vinyl siding (polyvinyl chloride or PVC) Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Judith Helfand set out with award-winning cinematographer/co-director Daneil B. Gold in search of the truth about vinyl, one of the fastest selling plastics in America. With a deep appreciation for irony, a great deal of chutzpah, and a piece of blue vinyl siding firmly in hand, Helfand and Gold travel from suburban Long Island to the vinyl-manufacturing capital of Louisiana and as far as Venice, Italy--where 31 former executives from a PVC-producing company are on trial for manslaughter. Artfully balancing the horror with the humor, unexpected twists with unbelievable turns, Blue Vinyl is a sobering, shockingly funny, uniquely personal exploration into what it takes to be a really educated consumer.

Vinyl Kills

Judith Helfand and her parents are super. The film is a little, teeny bit slow. But is has a charm that balances the dreadful facts about vinyl against all the people that have died to produce it. Because vinyl is inexpensive, it is usually the homeowner's (and always the contractor's) first choice for re-siding the house. If everyone understood the long-term cost and the deadly truth about vinyl they would never choose a low-cost solution that literally kills the people who make it. Vinyl is toxic. Period. It needs to be driven from the planet. The odd thing about this documentary is that by its refusal to do a "Michael Moore," the viewer may feel unconvinced. I think this is a revelatory lesson in the heightened state of media excess and fear mongering that we now feel is necessary in order to be convinced that there is something to fear. Definitely worth the watch. And by the way, bravo for the Louisiana Bucket Brigade.
