Plot Summary

A dark suburban fable exploring the nature of evil in unexpected places, Borgman follows an enigmatic vagrant who enters the lives of an upper-class family and quickly unravels their carefully curated lifestyle. Charming and mysterious, Camiel Borgman seems almost otherworldly, and it isn't long before he has the wife, children and nanny under his spell in a calculated bid to take over their home life. However, his domestic assimilation takes a malevolent turn as his ultimate plan comes to bear, igniting a series of increasingly maddening and menacing events.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The story's magic is black, its perfidy driven by evil spirits. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jun 5, 2014

Fresh: It's the hypnotic little thriller's disturbing twists that make it such a singular -- and singularly weird -- experience. – Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly, Jun 20, 2014

Fresh: Though it's too enigmatic for its own good and often feels like it's being made up as it goes, the Dutch import "Borgman" holds interest if only to see what might possibly happen next. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, Jun 19, 2014

Fresh: While the film ultimately is not as satisfying as it promises to be for much of the duration, it remains bracingly creepy and off-kilter. – David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter, Jun 2, 2014

Misogynistic, xeophobic

This film capitalizes upon an fear of betrayal by women who are loved by men and the corruption of an orderly and productive life by strangers (foreigners) who insinuate themselves into the orderly world and seduce the women into that betrayal. I am wondering if this is the best this obviously talented director could accomplish with this genre of horror. Alternatively, was it their intention to undermine trust in women and to perpetuate misogynistic and xenophobic attitudes in a world needing little encouragement?

What in *ell did I just watch?

It would have been nice if they would have explained just who and what these weirdos wanted. lol Totally undeserving the Rotten Tomato rating it got. Pretty bad movie overall. It was like someone just said "Let's make a bunch of strange things happen and don't explain any of it and call it art." Avoid this movie.

This was beyond dumb

This was really stupid and some people will say its because you don't get it, if you want to see a good foreign movie go watch metro Manila. This was trying to be dark and mysterious but in fact it was just a bad ending to a bad movie.
