Plot Summary

Uganda has been called one of the worst places on earth to be a child. In the South, children face the threat of poverty and disease. In the North, these threats are enflamed by brutal, mindless war inflicted by the Lord's Resistance Army (L.R.A.) that has divided families, displaced millions and led to the abduction and mutilation of tens of thousands of children resulting in the deterioration of identity and culture. Bouncing Cats is the inspiring story of one man's attempt to create a better life for the children of Uganda using the unlikely tool of hip-hop with a focus on b-boy culture and breakdance. In 2006, Abraham "Abramz" Tekya, a Ugandan b-boy and AIDS orphan created Breakdance Project Uganda. The dream was to establish a free workshop that would empower, rehabilitate, and heal the community by teaching youth about b-boy culture. Narrated by Common and featuring interviews with Will.I.Am, and K'Naan, and Mos Def, the story follows Crazy Legs of the Rock Steady Crew, b-boy Abramz, and Breakdance Project Uganda on a journey to use hip-hop culture for positive social change.

AMAZING

I had the honor of getting to know Abramz while working abroad, and saw this documentary a while back. It is a great documentary about a man that made something from nothing, and helped countless people along the way. A story of bravery, courage, and dedication -- It is a must watch.

Hip Hop is Not Dead

This is a great documentary. Growing up, I felt like there was a vision for Hip Hop; a sense that we all belonged to something special and that in the space that was created in music, dance, fashion, and graffiti we would continue to define and express “us”. This documentary proves that Hip Hop lives as a social agent and that in Uganda, its expression is as pure as it gets. Breakdance Project Uganda keep up the good work, inspiring, leading, and motivating young people. Keep Hip Hop alive!
