Plot Summary

Fresh: While there is a striking similarity [to Bonnie and Clyde] in general content, background, fine color photography and even the use of hillbilly music, the new, more modest film stands curiously on its own.
Rotten: The Roger Corman production, shot on an austere budget in Arkansas area, is routinely directed by Martin Scorsese.
Fresh: Scorsese remains one of the bright young hopes of American movies.
Rotten: 'Promising juvenilia' is about the most one can say for it.

Boxcar Bertha is Martin Scorsese's drive-in dues-paying movie. After this 1972 chronicle of union organizers running afoul of evil bankers and their allies in the south, his career took off. Plenty of cheap thrills here, along with solid performances by a strong cast and glimpses of what would become Marty's signature style.
