Plot Summary

Fresh: By the climax, at which all right-thinking viewers will have dissolved in a puddle of warm appreciation, the new Pixar film has earned two cheers and a big bear hug.
Fresh: The story, with its patchwork of plots (involving feuding clans and disastrous spells), holds together enough to thrill intermittently.
Rotten: The main problem is that Merida craves adventure but Brave limits her to mother-daughter psychodrama.
Fresh: The story for this revisionist fairy tale, which promotes contemporary attitudes about parenting and gender equality, is less inspired than usual for Pixar, but the movie upholds the studio's high standard of computer animation.

Pixar Does It Again!
"Brave" is, hands down, the best animated movie of the year so far, at least in my opinion. My family and I went to see it on opening weekend and it was fantastic. The characters were memorable, the story was exciting, and the animation was beyond astonishing. You can tell the animators were intent on making the world of ancient Scotland look as lifelike and historically accurate as possible. I also appreciated how the plot mostly revolved around the close mother-daugther relationship between Merida and Elinor. Even if it wasn't exactly the strongest story in Pixar's long line of films, it was still funny and engaging enough to keep me glued to my seat the whole time. As a whole, "Brave" is a thrilling, heartfelt, and beautiful movie of epic proportions. I don't mean to sound cheesy, but that's how I really feel about it. I'll admit, it's not Pixar's best, but if you're looking for some quality family entertainment, look no further than this delightful, kid-friendly romp.
Beautiful animation, uninspiring plot
Pixar's animators have created one of their most beautiful movies yet.
And then someone forgot to write a decent plot.
Without a doubt, the sheer detail and beauty of the animation is impressive, but the plot is the saddest, most tired, stereotypical, ham-fisted Disney Princess plot I've ever seen Pixar lower itself to produce. I was genuinely disappointed because it was so painfully obvious that immense effort and research had been devoted to making the animation accurate and incredibly detailed. If only someone had bothered to make the writers do something similar.
Loved it...
Lots of critics said stuff like "it's not up to Pixar's standards" blah blah blah. Saw this in the theatre, my 6 year old enjoyed it, my wife enjoyed it, I enjoyed it. Success! Really fun movie, heartfelt, funny, sad, scary, beautiful, what more could you ask for? Two thumbs up!
