Plot Summary
Hailed for its groundbreaking visual effects and satirical story, Brazil is one of the most highly regarded films of all time and a bona fide cult classic. Jonathan Pryce stars as Sam Lowry, a grey-suited government clerk who finds his life turned upside-down when he gets involved in a case of mistaken identity. Categorized as an enemy of the state, Sam is propelled into a surreal romance with the woman of his dreams, who may also be a terrorist. Co-starring Robert De Niro and Michael Palin, director Terry Gilliam’s modern masterpiece is a pitch-black comedic look at a “perfect” future where technology reigns supreme.

Fresh: A superb example of the power of comedy to underscore serious ideas, even solemn ones.
Fresh: Brazil offers a chillingly hilarious vision of the near-future.
Fresh: Gilliam understood that all futuristic films end up quaintly evoking the naive past in which they were made, and turned the principle into a coherent comic aesthetic.
Fresh: [A] darkly funny and truly visionary retro-futurist fantasy.

Love this movie… but not this version.
Brazil had a very… difficult road of production and release. There are currently four primary versions: The European Theatrical Cut (142min.), The US Theatrical Cut (131min. THIS VERSION), The "Love Conquers All" Sheinberg TV Edit (94min. and makes no sense, despite its "happy ending"), and Terry Gilliam's "Final" Director's Cut (142min, but different than the European Cut. Only available via Criterion Collection). Although this version is nowhere near as bad as the "Love Conquers All" version, it still isn't quite Brazil. The European version has minor, cosmetic differences with the "Final" cut, and many less-detail-oriented will not notice any changes (to a film crafted by one of the most detail-oriented artists in film). Highly recommend getting ahold of the Director's preferred "Final" Cut, rather than this not-quite-as-butchered version.
