Plot Summary
In this ground-breaking documentary, openly LGBT elected officials at all levels and from across the country - including the first gay US Senator, Tammy Baldwin - share their stories of self-doubt and triumph over multiple barriers ranging from race and poverty to gender and sexual orientation, revealing a deeply personal, rarely-seen side of politicians and LGBT people. Tho’ featuring politicians, it isn’t about politics: it’s about people who feel fear and shame, yearning to live meaningful lives. In Breaking Through, they describe the conflict they experienced between the barrage of anti-gay messages they were forced to confront and their desire to live open and fulfilled lives.

One of the best documentaries of its kind!
I just saw “Breaking Through” yesterday, and it is by far one of the best documentaries about LGBT civil rights I have seen! It was incredibly powerful, and I’m amazed to see how successful all of these elected officials have become, despite the prejudice and hardships they endured because of their sexual orientation, race, or gender. I know that I myself could not have had the strength that these officials have demonstrated. It’s interesting to see a relatable, more human side of politicians that we don’t typically think about – these are vulnerable men and women who have faced criticism and have been put down throughout their lives, and yet they have overcome these obstacles to achieve their goals. This documentary is truly inspiring to everyone facing any kind of discrimination in my opinion, which makes it relatable even if you do not identify as a member of the LGBT community. There are a lot of valuable stories in this film. Definitely a must-see!
Great Documentary
I really loved this documentary. It was great hearing the personal stories of politicians in the LGBT community, and seeing how they have achieved their personal and professional goals despite their initial fears that their sexuality would hold them back. Their stories can serve as inspiration to other young people in the LGBT community who might have the same fears these politicians did when they were younger, and really to anyone who fears some aspect of themselves will keep them from achieving their dreams. It was a very moving documentary, and one that everyone can enjoy, regardless of which political party you support or whether you necessarily agree with the politicians' platforms -- they're all very human, very personal stories.
Breaking Through: The Message America Needs
Think about the sound of repetitious music playing through a tediously long movie. It is near monotone in sound, in fact, it sounds as though the song were looping. That is this movie in a nutshell, in soundtrack. It won’t win any awards for original score and it may put some to sleep. HOWEVER, it will grab your attention through the politicians and big names displayed on screen! They are the inspiring leaders that have amazing stories to share and overall the movie, despite the soundtrack flaw, is uplifting and inspirational. I enjoyed this movie mostly for those reasons, and I think those who need something inspirational would get a kick out of this as well!
