Plot Summary

Brendan Frye is a loner, someone who knows all the angles but has chosen to stay on the outside. When the girl he loves turns up dead, he is determined to find the "who" and "why" and plunges into the dark and dangerous social strata of rich girl Laura, intimidating Tug, drug-addled Dode, seductive Kara, and the ominous Pin. But who can he really trust? These are the ingredients of Brick, a gritty and provocative thriller that critics describe as "a clever, twist-filled whodunit!" (Claudia Puig, USA Today)

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Alas, Brick, from writer-director Rian Johnson, isn't as clever as its conceit. – Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Brick is smart -- perhaps too smart for its own good at times. But in the end, its affectations add up to entertainment. – Tom Long, Detroit News, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Although Brick can be a bit thick, you have to admire the effort. – Bill Muller, Arizona Republic, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The teens in Rian Johnson's striking debut feature Brick express themselves in jargon that sounds as if lifted straight from the pages of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. – Sight and Sound, Dec 15, 2006

So original

The first time i saw this movie it was like being hit by a ton of, well... bricks. It's totally not what you expect, but in a really great way. It breaks free of all the normal, boring, predictable plotlines. Definitely worth not only an initial look, but a second and third as well!

The Return of the Great Noir Story

This Movie works as both a testament to making a lot with a shoe string budget and a fresh take on an old genre. This is a movie that takes place in a highly stylized world were highschool kids talk much more wise beyond their years like their in a old mystery novel from the 30's or 40's, but never is it done in a way that's winking at the camera. Rain Johnson is one of the next big visionaries in cinema.

One of The Best films of 2006

What Rian Johnson did here is genius. He took a very often used setting, a modern day high school, and gave it an old school twist. By using the lingo and atmosphere of old crime thrillers like Mickey Spilane novels, the viewer gets sucked into this world, rooting for the main character to find the truth. A small suggestion, watch the movie with the subtitles, the retro-speak is the best part but can sometimes get lost due to our unfamiliarity with it. You'll find yourself wanting to quote this film it's that well written.
