Plot Summary

A lavish romantic drama that charts the lives of three different women from different backgrounds, forever changed when they emigrate to New Zealand as war brides. Eager to escape the gloom of post-war Holland, shy but sensual farm girl Ada, dogmatic Marjorie, and Jewish fashion designer Esther become friends during the 1953 KLM flight that carried war brides to their waiting husbands, who have already settled in Christchurch. They part ways upon arrival in their new country and begin their new lives, but their paths continue to cross in the years to come. Chance meetings result in love affairs, betrayal and impenetrable bonds, leading up to a final reunion fifty years later.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The weepy story at the heart of "Bride Flight" is trumped by its sumptuous depiction of New Zealand in the 1950s and '60s. This lushness has the effect of a powerful fabric softener added to the wash. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jun 9, 2011

Fresh: This Dutch melodrama compels despite its formulaic elements. – Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter, Jun 13, 2011

Fresh: Bride Flight gives a panoramic sweep of lives as they're lived, as there is a lot of beauty in it. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 9, 2011

Rotten: "Bride Flight'' is the sort of old-fashioned women's picture they stopped making around the time Christina Crawford had to put away the wire hangers. – Mark Feeney, Boston Globe, Jun 16, 2011

When to Take the Bus

What I learned from watching Bride Flight:

If a suitor asks you to ride in the bed of the pickup when he collects you from the airport, get out of the truck and go on the bus. :)
Of course that would be a very short movie...

What can I say….

It is the best Dutch movie after Zwartboek (Black book)! Excellent cast, especially Anna Drijver and Willeke van Amerooy play their best roles until now!

Loved this movie!!

I absolutely loved this movie. I rarely write a review for anything but this movie gripped me in from the very beginning and the love between Ada and frank had me tearing up in the first 15 minutes. If you love good, heart warming romances you must see this movie!
