Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: How bad could a movie be that features talent as serious as Robert De Niro, Kathy Bates, Gabriel Byrne, Harvey Keitel, F. Murray Abraham and Geraldine Chaplin? That bad, alas. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Feb 25, 2009

Rotten: The stellar cast can do little to paper over the cracks in an awkward, unevenly-paced script that is composed of a series of sometimes-attractive scenes with little emotional undertow. – Jonathan Holland, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Visually sumptuous but dramatically muddled and confusing, The Bridge of San Luis Rey ultimately comes across as a soporific costume drama featuring a gallery of miscast stars. – Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: An honorable but dull attempt to translate a neglected literary source to the screen. – Ben Kenigsberg, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

Strange and sad movie, yet interesting and visually embracing

I found The Bridge of San Luis Rey while looking for movies based on the life of La Perricholi, the famous Peruvian actress and lover of the Viceroy in Lima on the XVIII century. The movie is based on the Pulitzer winner book of the same name, from American Author Thornton Wilder. While the piece is not based on "La Perichole", the movie explores the complex ways of destiny and fate, after a bizarre accident happens in the highlands near Lima. A monk tries to find logic and consequence on this unfortunate incident, so he starts an insightful and intimate journey on the lives of each one of the people who died on the Bridge of San Luis Rey. Kathy Bates and Robert de Niro are superb as the Marquesa de Montemayor and the Archbishop of Lima respectively.
