Plot Summary
The scene is Brighton, with holiday makers awaiting the arrival of Kolley Kibber, who is working on a stunt for his newspaper. A gang, led by Pinkie Brown, recognize Kibber as the man indirectly responsible for the death of a former gang leader. Kibber, recognizing the vicious young Pinkie, fears his life is in danger. He is right: his body is later washed ashore. Spicer, one of the gang, ensures an alibi by leaving Kibber's cards at various places. But he gets an attack of nerves, and Pinkie arranges for a rival gang to eliminate him.

Fresh: This tends to prove that Britain can turn out a gangster picture as brutal as any Hollywood had devised.

Fresh: Anyone interested after seeing this film [the 2011 version] should go straight to the 1947 original and the uncanny way in which the steadily decent and amiable Attenborough was so scary.

Film Making Has Come Along Way Since Brighton Rock
For those of who have seen Richard Attenborough in more highly acclaimed productions such as The Great Escape, it is may be somewhat painful to watch him in this "Top 50" British made film.
The story line is choppy at best and acting stilted. The redeeming ending does give a punch to the emotional gut which gives cause to reflect the nature of human motives.
One must balance this against the backdrop of movie and film production 65 years ago. Then, it was compelling release as the public streamed to cinemas to watch the latest productions and stars. Part of that draw was a desire to escape the reality of the world at war (WW II).
But Brighton Rock pales with gangster productions coming out of Hollywood and England over the last 30 years.
For those who are fans of really old, film noir, and who have stream of anglophile flowing in the veins, it is worth a watch . Otherwise, and I daresay this applies to most modern film buffs, you may want to give this a pass.
Summary: interesting but a so so production.
