Plot Summary

BROADWAY: THE GOLDEN AGE is an utterly entertaining and inspiring documentary that not only provides astonishing insights into the early days of Broadway, but also gives us compelling anecdotal portraits of the struggles and triumphs of over 100 legendary performers, composers and writers in the New York City of a bygone era, still vividly remembered. Award-winning filmmaker Rick McKay takes a journey over four continents and five years to find out whether there had ever truly been a golden age of theatre and, if it really did exist, why it had never been documented. As the film progresses, audiences will be delighted by amazing, rare, archival footage and photos and riveted by the fascinating personal stories told by the now-famous people who lived them.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Perhaps the screen's most authoritative encapsulation of Broadway history and an intimately resonant one. – Scott Foundas, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: In what must have been a daunting challenge, given the richness of the material, McKay managed to cull from more than 250 hours of footage an admirably comprehensive and revealing documentary running a taut 110 minutes. – Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: While less than artfully composed, Rick McKay's homegrown documentary about the glory days of the American theater represents an invaluable oral history. – Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Rather than listen to these old-timers reminisce about the good old days ... my advice is to get out and support your local thespians instead. – John Monaghan, Detroit Free Press, Jun 24, 2010
