Plot Summary

"Is it possible for an artist to break?" Following on-the-verge artist Will Gray through the recording of his debut album (featuring production by Grammy Award-winning producer, T Bone Burnett), Broke* chronicles the stories of artists and executives searching for ways to thrive in the face of today’s music industry challenges. Featuring candid interviews with industry insiders and intimate profiles of some of the brightest emerging musical talent in the country, the film digs beneath the clichés and standard storylines to reveal an industry struggling to find a new identity and an artist who’s simply trying to establish one.

A vital document of emerging artists

I've seen this documentary a couple of times during its festival run and look forward to owning it. If you're interested in how music is created and how it finds a home, you will appreciate WIll's journey, but what makes this documentary remarkable is also its broader focus on other talented musicians, and on-camera interviews with industry leaders. Will has created a document of the music industry in the post-digital era. Personal stories unfold with Will's band on the road. The performances, especially Will's cover of Patty Griffin's "Top of the World," are worth repeated viewings.

A great look inside an artist's journey.

Just finished it. Loved it. For me, it was about love. Love of the art, the people you surround yourself with, the music, the journey...all of it. Parts were heartbreaking. Knowing what some artists go through in order to live their love of music and create. So full of inspiration. It speaks to anyone who had a love of creating and making soul connections with an art form. Really good. I believe everyone will get something from it...except for Kanye West of course. But, maybe he will, too.

Required viewing

This documentary should be required curriculum in any music school. The importance of building your team, and how much you must rely on them is so far from the DIY ideas that have been associated with being an "independent" artist. The film is an emotional journey full of teaching moments. Best documentary I've seen this year.
