Plot Summary

Only An Outsider Could Bring This Vision Of Outsiders To The Screen

Brokeback Mountain is not just a masterpiece. Like High Noon, Brokeback changed the cinematic vocabulary of the American western, and America herself, forever. One original theme of Brokeback is the real, heroic life of the poor and underclass, people usually ignored, belittled, or stereotyped in almost all movies and TV over the last 30 years. Unspoken love between men in the Wild West is another quite original, new theme so carefully thought out by the authors and filmmakers.These guys who just wanted to be cowboys watch the very ideas of the American west and the cowboy vanish in slow motion over decades. before their very eyes. Just as it took an outsider to capture the classic vision of LA noir in "Chinatown," it took another outsider to bring this vision of a secret place where men could be free and could love each other, however briefly and tragically, to the screen. Can anyone under 45 today really understand how closed, difficult, and horrible it was like to be the hated homosexual, to be denied any place or future or love in American society before 1970? To live in a world where nobody in their wildest dreams could possibly imagine same sex love could be permitted, let alone depicted in a sympathetic light in popular movies. A time when the possibility of gay marriage was considered far crazier than a man on the moon?! Yes, you should cry when you watch Brokeback. This film shows how far we have come as a society since that vast time of darkness and heartbreak.

Ang Lee's Masterpiece

Ang Lee is well known for giving emphasis on his movie's characters. Taking this into consideration, and reading Annie Proulx's short story (this movie is based on that short story), you will see why this movie is such a success. I really really suggest you read the short story... it will take your breath away. And after, watch the movie... you'll understand a lot of things much better. The actor's performances are, for lack of a better word, simply amazing. Specially Heath Ledger. It's such an honest movie. With only one thing to say: love is love, it doesn't matter where, how, or who feels it... love is love.

A Masterpiece.

This movie had me in tears, kept me waiting to see what happened next, and what would become of the characters. I couldn't ask for anything more in a movie. Ang Lee, an amazing director, Jake Gyllenhaal, a great actor, and Heath Ledger, words cant describe how much of an amazing actor he was and how much he deserved that best actor award. This movie opened doors for others, like Milk, where Sean Penn won for best actor. Buy this, you wont regret it at all.
