Plot Summary

Takeshi "Beat" Kitano (Fireworks [Hana-Bi], Sonatine) literally explodes in a blaze of bullets and a flurry of wild action in his first English-language film. Also starring the incredibly talented Omar Epps (Love and Basketball) and Masayo Kato (Godzilla), BROTHER is one of the coolest, wildest, most intense thrill rides you've ever taken! A yakuza gangster (Kitano) is exiled to Los Angeles after his crime boss is murdered in a Tokyo gang war. Arriving in L.A. with a big bag of money and a really bad attitude, he hooks up with his half-brother, the leader of a small-time drug ring. Together with a local street hustler (Epps). the brothers declare war on the other local drug trafficers and ignite the bloodiest, dirtiest, nastiest power struggle the mean streets of L.A. have ever seen.

They finally have it!

Forget what the critics said about this movie. Takeshi Kitano is very well known for the brutality in his movies, including this one. Quentin Tarantino actually drew inspiration from Kitano's films. So if you like Tarantino films and Yakuza related subjects, check out this movie!

Great Film however not for the critics that like American 'Feel-good' movies

This film was not made with an American's perspective into the structure, motivations, honor or sense of duty that the typical Japanese citizen would understand. This film was made in an attempt to illustrate to the American public these commonalities in the darker portions of Japan's society. Reading and accepting carte-Blanche a review from someone that knows nothing of the society nor the point of this film is very similar to reading a script in Japanese and not liking it because you only understand English.

Takeshi again!

Although this is not my preferred from Takeshi, it is a great fiction and a thoroughly enjoyable cinematographic experience. The story does not take place in Japan and was recorded more from an American perspective but all the usual ingredients are present, i.e. japanese traditions, poetry & violence, and maybe more than anything this fantastic presence and charism of Takeshi that is palpable on the other side of the screen which makes his movies so special.
