Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Brothers, the new home-from-the-war film, written by David Benioff and directed by Jim Sheridan, has been made with obvious devotion and sincerity, and I wish I could take it seriously. – David Denby, New Yorker, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Brothers is that rare type of film; one that feels real and true, never forcing itself to conform to the expectations of what a movie should contain. – Simon Miraudo, Quickflix, Apr 4, 2011

Fresh: Director Sheridan effectively contrasts the domestic character-driven drama set in suburban America with genuinely harrowing and authentic war sequences. – Gavin Bond, Sunday Times (Australia), Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: While you would be better off tracking down a copy of the 2004 Danish film, this 2009 American remake still packs a punch where it counts. – Thomas Caldwell, Cinema Autopsy, Jul 7, 2010

Hmm...

Brothers is a film that seems to end once it seems to be rising to its full potential of power. This isn't a good thing... Don't get me wrong, the movie itself had a powerful performance by Toby, but it seemed near pointless. By the films end you get a sense of time wasted and wish it would have continued on for another hour or so as to let the story progress as it should have throughout the duration of the film. It's a pretty shot movie that gets to the point and sticks to it...it doesn't attempt to stray from its intended motive and doesn't intend to dig any deeper than one character. Not all the characters are believable but it tries to convince us that they are. This isn't a perfect movie and isn't a complete waste of time, but it really could have developed more than it did. A rental at best...

10000 STARS.

INCREDIBLE. It made you appreciate life. My friend and I saw it and when we came out of the theatre we were both crying, went up to our dads and hugged them. We both promised to buy it right when it came out which I never do but it was just too good not to.

A story that will haunt you.

A realistic story of a POW with post tramatic stress and how it affects his family. The choices he has to make are chilling and the torment and horror leaves you with wonder on what you would do if it had been you. A great film that you will be talking about long after it's over.
