Plot Summary

Sidney (Sanaa Lathan) and Dre (Taye Diggs) have been friends since they were ten years old. What brought them together? A love for a burgeoning new music style called hip-hop. 20 years later, Dre is the owner of a successful record company and Sidney is a respected and hard-nosed music journalist, and both are still friends... close friends. So close, in fact, that everyone around them is surprised that they haven’t gotten romantically involved with the other. When Dre proposes to his beautiful lawyer girlfriend Reese (Nicole Ari Parker), Sidney begins to question her own relationship with her boyfriend. As Dre’s wedding day draws nearer, Sidney begins to fear that Dre has always been the love of her life and she’s let him slip through her hands. Legendary basketball player-turned-entrepreneur Earvin “Magic” Johnson served as executive producer of this smart urban love story.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Taye Diggs never overdoes Dre's intensity or integrity; he's an understated leading man who is all the more likable because of it. But it's Sanaa Lathan as Sidney who won my heart here. – Charles Taylor, Salon.com, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Takes every convention of the romantic comedy genre and turns it on its ear. – Carla Meyer, San Francisco Chronicle, Nov 19, 2002

Rotten: Too much about Brown Sugar is carried out with utmost decorum, as if writer-director Rick Famuyiwa were bringing hip-hop home to meet the parents. – Wesley Morris, Boston Globe, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The movie plays cute more than smart, but it's far from dumb -- and marks yet another baby step forward in the growing sophistication of African-American film. – Gene Seymour, Newsday, Jun 24, 2010
