Plot Summary
BUCK, a richly textured and visually stunning film, follows Brannaman from his abusive childhood to his phenomenally successful approach to horses. A real-life “horse-whisperer”, he eschews the violence of his upbringing and teaches people to communicate with their horses through leadership and sensitivity, not punishment. Buck possesses near magical abilities as he dramatically transforms horses – and people – with his understanding, compassion and respect. In this film, the animal-human relationship becomes a metaphor for facing the daily challenges of life. A truly American story about an unsung hero, BUCK is about an ordinary man who has made an extraordinary life despite tremendous odds.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The result is a portrait that expertly mirrors its subject: Buck is shaped with the same economy, restraint, and unfussiness as the man, to unexpectedly inspiring effect.
Fresh: It's well and good to hear Buck and others tell his story, but the film wouldn't come to much if you didn't feel the connection between his present and past in every frame.
Fresh: Documentaries have a wonderful way of making us care about people and things way outside our own experience, and "Buck" is a prime example.
Fresh: You don't have to be a horse nut to fall for "Buck," one of those rare documentaries whose subject is so inherently fascinating that a fictional character could hardly compete.

A message to connect...
After attending Mr. Brannaman's clinic, I began to develop this technique with my animals...all of them: horses, chickens, geese, cattle. And then I found myself approaching my family, friends and neighbors with this new understanding and new appreciation for the profundity of simple gestures. Hats off to Robert Redford for helping to get this message on film -- it's a good message.
Compelling Story
Saw this film at Sundance where is was an audience favorite. This is a powerful story of a man who finds personal redemption through helping others, not just horses, but the people who own them and love them. It really doesn't matter whether you are into horses, as it's really about people. This is not just a well assembled, entertaining documentary project. It's about a truly inspiring person, Buck Brannon.
Like a love story!
This is a very touching story. It's Buck's way to enlightenment. He loves what he does and mastered his skill to communicate with the horses. He forgives but has not forgotten what his abusive father did to him. And lives on without rancor. It's so graceful and so nice the way he treats his kids. It has also to do with his angel of a stepmother who took those kids under her wings. I recognize a lot of what he does. Empathy and it's all about yourself. I am a surgeon.
