Plot Summary
A U.S. soldier with nothing to fight but boredom as the Cold War winds down, Ray Elwood (Phoenix) enjoys the rush of trading anything he can get his hands on in West Germany's booming black market ... while his inept commander (Ed Harris, THE HOURS) is none the wiser. Everything is perfect ... until he starts dating the new sergeant's daughter (Anna Paquin). But before he can pull off one last big score, Elwood's escalating personal war with Sergeant Lee will send him deeper into a deadly mess ... that may not have a way out!

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Ultimately, it's a cold, caustic film that doesn't take a strong point of view but seems to offer up its numerous set pieces ... for sheer goony pleasure.
Fresh: It's an enjoyable and occasionally thought-provoking motion picture whose viewership should not be diminished by the unfortunate and inaccurate 'anti-American' label.
Fresh: Imagine Radar from M*A*S*H gone bad, and you get the idea.
Fresh: If you can get past the idea that Buffalo Soldiers ... has any real relevance, you are likely to enjoy its sitcom snap and the performance of Phoenix.
Customer Reviews
Darkly humorous snapshot of the late 80"s Army
Having been in the Army during this time, I laughed at the crude and the grotesque just like any good line doggie does. There are some statements made that, in the context of the film and time, are simply profound: "War may be hell, but Peace is boring", and "In peace the warlike man fights himself." The fact is that the entire story could have happened, given the status of things during this time in history. In the Army, some units had much more equipment than they needed, money was being spent on us hand over fist, and very often no one was watching the back door.
