Plot Summary

Ali (Christina Aguilera) is a small-town girl with a big voice who escapes hardship and an uncertain future to follow her dreams to LA. After stumbling upon The Burlesque Lounge, a majestic but ailing theater that is home to an inspired musical revue, Ali lands a job as a cocktail waitress from Tess (Cher), the club's proprietor and headliner. Burlesque's outrageous costumes and bold choreography enrapture the young ingenue, who vows to perform there one day. Soon enough, Ali builds a friendship with a featured dancer (Julianne Hough), finds an enemy in a troubled, jealous performer (Kristen Bell), and garners the affection of Jack (Cam Gigandet), a bartender and fellow musician. With the help of a sharp-witted stage manager (Stanley Tucci) and gender-bending host (Alan Cumming), Ali makes her way from the bar to the stage. Her spectacular voice restores The Burlesque Lounge to its former glory, though not before a charismatic entrepreneur (Eric Dane) arrives with an enticing proposal...

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Has the glitz and allure of a Victoria's Secret ad. What it doesn't have is an imaginative reinvention of the show-biz cliches that have so adamantly inspired it. – Bruce Diones, New Yorker, Dec 6, 2010

Rotten: Burlesque manages what seemed impossible: It is filled with half-naked dancing girls, yet it's still boring. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Jan 4, 2011

Fresh: Even the dances feel cozily dated, as choreographers Denise Faye and Joey Pizzi borrow liberally from Bob Fosse. – Andrea Gronvall, Chicago Reader, Jan 4, 2011

Rotten: Burlesque may be aiming for Cabaret-style glamour, but mostly it plays like stale cheese. – Julie Rigg, MovieTime, ABC Radio National, Sep 6, 2011

2 Thumbs Up!!!

One of year's greatest shows. From the moment it starts, anticipation of what's going to happen next just never stops. Great vocals by Christina & Cher alike. Dancing from all the cast is a must see for all ages. Don't pay attention to what the critics say in the "Tomato Review", as, from what I've found, most critics don't know what they're talking about. Would not be surprised but what this becomes one of the modern classics.

New personal favorite :)

Wow! When I first saw this in theaters, I was expecting it to be good but nothing too special. After watching it, I was actually surprised how much I loved it! The critics were saying how subpar and trashy it was, and since I had been initially interested, I decided to give it a chance anyways. Now I know that I shouldn't listen to critics, and I should only go see a movie if I want to see it, not if critics think it's good or bad. Like I said, I loved the movie, but it does have its flaws. For one, the story is very cliched and something we have all seen before many times. Second, there are some awkward line deliveries that feel forced. Now the good parts of the movie. The music is the most significant highlight. Christina shines with her soaring vocals on every track she performs, not to mention Cher's contribution with her show stopping tune, "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me." This is just one heck of an entertaining movie, and I personally believe that it isn't trying to be anything more, and it isn't taking itself too seriously. The dancing is also great fun! So in short, it is a very fun movie, and though it has its flaws, it's one of my favorite new musicals! Don't listen to the critics and give it a chance :)

Loved it!!!!!!

This movie was great! If you love glitter, cool dance numbers, and burlesque then then this is indeed a movie for you!
