Plot Summary
In a high-security prison in Rome, inmates prepare for the staging of Julius Caesar. Shakespeare’s universal language helps the inmate-actors to identify with their characters, but the path is long and full of anxiety, hope and play. The wonder and pride for the play do not always free the inmates from the exasperation of being incarcerated, and angry confrontations put the show in danger. On the anticipated but feared day of opening night, the play is brought to life in front of a diverse audience of inmates, actors, students and directors.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Ranks among the most involving adaptations of Shakespeare ever put on screen ...
Fresh: So solid is that conception, and so resonant the text in which questions of freedom and slavery are paramount, that the impact can hardly be diminished.
Fresh: The Tavianis blur the boundaries between fact and fiction, but they couldn't do it without the full complicity of their actors, or the audience.
Fresh: The film gets on screen not only the play's bloody, double-dealing, hungry essence, but the redemptive potential of art.
