Plot Summary
When the CEO of France’s Phenix Bank collapses on the golf course, Machiavellian young executive Marc Tourneuil (Gad Elmaleh) is crowned as his replacement. A whirlwind of power struggles, greed and deception ensues as Tourneuil’s brutal ascent is jeopardized by a hostile takeover attempt from American hedge fund manager Dittmar Rigule (Gabriel Byrne), erotic distractions from international supermodel Nassim (Liya Kebede), and adversaries with an agenda for destruction.

Rotten: The movie, based on Stephane Osmont's 2004 novel of the same title, is stiff and didactic. Even the high life portrayed in the film seems pallid, as if the director were frozen in disgust.
Fresh: A cracking good melodrama set in a contemporary world of high finance and low cunning.
Rotten: What's lacking is most surprising from this dissident filmmaker: the emotional outrage.
Fresh: A serious European financial thriller is something of a novelty, and Costa-Gavras, the militant film master par excellence, shows perfect timing in his ambitious Capital, a film that lingers in the memory in spite of being rather irritating to watch.

The Seduction by Money
Not as intense or thrilling as it might have been. But well written and acted and entertaining to see the seduction of a banker by the dirty world of global finance.
Costa Gravas was once a politico-thriller master. As age takes some power from the master, a very smooth hand, intelligent and tasteful presentation remains in control.
Could have been better, but the topic has been trampled on by many. There is little room left to make capitalism, greed and the slippery slope of power more dramatic or more nefarious.
It rules the world, ruins the world, but is triumphant over communism, socialism and whatever system of economics dreamt up by mankind.
Bankers are the kings of the world. This is another of their stories.
Chief
I am pretty generous with film reviews, but this one was one of the most disjointed plots and character developments I have ever seen. I suppose this was intended to be some sort of value judgement on American style capitalism by Les Francais, but it was a poor effort. View at your own risk.
Capital
I did not see "Capital" on Itunes. No, I saw "Capital" at the MVFF in San Rafael. I absolutely loved it! I loved it not just because I am a Byrneholic and love all of Mr. Byrne's films either. Gad Elmaleh was terrific as Marc. I thought "Capital" was better than "The Wolf on Wall Street." Costa Gavras remains a bloody brilliant director and filmmaker. I understand after having been so up close to Costa why Mr. Byrne is a good friend of Costa's and why he speaks so highly of Costa. "Capital" is one of those films that was created by intelligent filmmaking. It was great not coming from an American perspective. There are too many movies like "The Wolf on Wall Street," from the American perspective which always deal with the same things. "Capital" was the best out of all of those films. "Capital" is in a league of it's own.
