Plot Summary
Powered by Georges Bizet's grand music and Oscar Hammerstein II's magnificent lyrics, this Americanized all-black version of the classic opera Carmen is a dynamic superb show with a positively incandescent Carmen. Oscar® -nominee Dorothy Dandridge stars in the title role, a passionate, sexy creature who lures Joe (Harry Belafonte), a handsome soldier, away from his sweetheart (Olga James). Following a fatal brawl with his sergeant, Joe deserts his regiment with the sultry femme fatale. But Carmen soon tires of him and takes up with a heavyweight prize-fighter (Joe Adams), triggering Joe's tragic revenge. Helping to set the screen on fire are Pearl Bailey and Diahann Carroll, part of the sensational troupe that makes this jubilant musical film hard to beat.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: A crazy mixed-up film.
Fresh: Otto Preminger has transferred it to the screen with taste and imagination in an opulent production.
Fresh: Impeccably liberal in its time, the film has not aged gracefully, although Dorothy Dandridge's performance in the lead remains a testimony to a black cinema that might have been.
Fresh: The best reason to revisit Carmen Jones lies in Dorothy Dandridge's electrifying performance, which saw her become the first African-American to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar.

Carmen Jones
Ahhh Carmen! In the operatic version Ms. Carmen leaves her poor AWOL soldier for a bullfighter; this Americanized Carmen takes "Jones," for her last name but the stories are the same. Sorry opera goers but this movie is better than any stage version of Carmen. Carmen Jones is lusty, modern and the words are understandable! Now when I see the opera "Carmen," I sing the "Carmen Jones" lyrics with the music (to myself of course) and the opera is improved 100%. Try it you'll Love it!
woderful musical !!
I was greatly inspired when i saw this movie because it is of the type of movie caucasions are usually in but african american's are in it and it was the first kind of musical ive seen with my kind of people in it.
POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!!!.
LOVE IT!!
The very first time I saw this movie, I fell in love with it. I'm not sure whether or not it was Dorothy's charismatic smile, or that fine Mr. Belafonte... but I was hooked. This film is a must see for all who love classic films.
