Plot Summary
Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss) survives a drag race in a rural Kansas town, then takes a job as a church organist in Salt Lake City. En route, she becomes haunted by a bizarre apparition that compels her to an abandoned lakeside pavillion. Herk Harvey's macabre masterpiece gained a cult following on late night television and has been bootlegged for years. Made by industrial filmmakers on a modest budget, Carnival of Souls was intended to have the "look of a Bergman" and "feel of a Cocteau," and succeeds with its strikingly-used locations and spooky organ score.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Occasionally a feature film emerges from the midwest, although this is the first ever out of Lawrence, Kans, where a group of commercial film pros veered off into a try at producing theatrical entertainment.
Fresh: Carnival of Souls works well enough as chill-up-the-spine cinema.
Fresh: It depends on crisp black-and-white photography, atmosphere and surprisingly effective acting.
Rotten: There isn't very much here to sustain interest.

Spooky midnight classic
Part Twilight Zone, Fellini, and Romero, this is one of the greatest scares on film. Made by independents far from Hollywood, it has become cult cannon. Must see at midnight under a blanket. Boo.
I SAW THIS A YEAR AGO
