Plot Summary

Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell) has lived and worked on his father's ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch faces financial strains, Armando's younger brother Raul (Diego Luna) shows up with his new fiancee, Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez) and pledges to settle all his father's debts. It seems that Raul's success as an international businessman means the ranch's troubles are over, but when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul's business dealings turn out to be less than legit, the Alvarez family finds themselves in a full-out war with Mexico's most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael García Bernal).

Fresh: Ferrell is an hombre loco. Mi gusta. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Mar 16, 2012

Fresh: This very funny spoof of telenovelas and classic Mexican westerns is decidedly offbeat and absurdly daffy. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Mar 15, 2012

Rotten: A lot of the film unrolls like wasted opportunities, placeholders between the cheesy musical interludes and ludicrous Peckinpah-esque violence. – Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times, Mar 15, 2012

Rotten: It's really strange, and it's really subtitled. – Amy Biancolli, San Francisco Chronicle, Mar 15, 2012

AN INTERESTING COMEDIC TURN FOR FERRELL

"Casa de mi Padre" isn't necessarily a bad movie, but it's not exactly as fun as it should be. As a Spanish-language comedy targeted mainly toward American audiences, this film largely succeeds. It constantly pokes fun at the countless clichés of telenovelas, and the oddball tone of the humor is gleefully absurd and ridiculously cheap. Will Ferrell hams it up to full effect as the protagonist, never once straying out of character and speaking in a hilariously deadpan Spanish accent the whole time. Unfortunately, the rest of the cast is completely overshadowed by Ferrell's performance, but they have their moments. Basically, what disappointed me about "Casa" is that it wears out its welcome far too quickly. With a weak plot and a poor script, the film suffers from uneven pacing and a lack of clever jokes. But if you can get past those problems, it still ends up being an entertaining B-movie, albeit an inconsistent one. Full of intentionally awkward dialogue, cheap production values, and satirical melodrama, "Casa de mi Padre" is a nonsensical, outrageous, often surreal R-rated comedy that isn't for everyone. If you enjoyed Robert Rodriguez's "Machete", then you'll probably like this film too. At the very least, it's worth a rent.

WHY ALL THE HATE!?

I loved this movie! It was surreal and Will Ferrell was incredible in it, as was the rest of the cast. Yes, it's not for everyone, but I really enjoyed it, so did the rest of my family. I was not disappointed at all, it mocked Spanish/Mexican soap operas and it was funny! I recommend it.

Spanish Person

This movie is genius if you're familiar with mexican soap operas and Will Ferrell's spanish was fantastic! The fact the he's not spanish playing a spanish role made it extra funny!! If you're not spanish speaking u won't like the movie!
