Plot Summary
Mike Nichols superbly directed this cinematic adaptation of Joseph Heller's scathing black comedy, the tale of a small group of flyers in the Mediterranean in 1944. There are winners and losers, opportunists and survivors. Separately and together, they are nervous, frightened, often profane and sometimes pathetic. Almost all are a little crazy. Catch-22 is an anti-war satire of epic proportions.

Fresh: Quite simply, the best American film I've seen this year.
Fresh: Nichols has done the same thing in "Catch-22" that he did in "The Graduate." He's given us a funny beginning, then switched tones and gone serious.
Fresh: Though the vertiginously absurdist logic of the book is hopelessly fractured, some of it does filter through (the mostly superb performances are a great help).

One of the greatest, funniest books of all time!
...and the movie does a fantastic job with an amazing cast to boot!
Great Book, Horrible Movie
I don't know why this movie turned out so bad. Alan Arkin and Jon Voight are in it so you would figure on a solid movie. I blame the screen play. They turned a basically straight narrative with a few absurd elements in to a farce. A couple of subtle things were changed that really baffled me. Major Major was not a Captain in the book. The reason he was funny was because they made him a major due to a clerical error involving his name: Major Major. Why did they make him a Captain in the movie? It ruined the whole joke. Hungry Joe was killed by a B-25 in the book, but in the film he was killed by a single-engine trainer. Why? That was a serious point in the book and they made it silly. All of the other crew members bailed out and the pilot flew the plane into a hill side due to his guilt. There are a bunch of other points like that that leave you scratching your head.
Catch-22
YESSS!!! You finally got it. Thank you. A real classic, and quite funny.
