Plot Summary

For the past 40 years, the race for the American Presidency has begun in the state of Iowa, where candidates spend months traveling the state's 99 counties hoping to win its “first-in-the-nation” vote and prove they are viable candidates. “Caucus” goes behind the scenes of the 2011-2012 campaign in Iowa as eight Republicans fight to become their party’s standard-bearer and take on Barack Obama. A never-before-seen look at an unforgettable political season, the film re-introduces viewers to the remarkable and unorthodox GOP field with special focus on former Senator Rick Santorum and the charismatic Congresswoman and self-proclaimed Tea Party leader Michele Bachmann. “Caucus” is an intimate, emotional, and often funny postmortem on the 2012 campaign, and a glimpse at the challenges that the Republican Party finds itself still facing a year later.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: While not quite apolitical, Mr. Schnack's wry film takes no partisan stance and is instead more focused on personalities than on the process. – Miriam Bale, New York Times, Nov 7, 2013

Fresh: Schnack's observational approach studiously avoids editorializing, allowing the words and actions captured by the cameras to speak for themselves. – Geoff Berkshire, Variety, Nov 8, 2013

Fresh: This gripping and grotesque portrait of retail politics in the Hawkeye State, entirely free of editorial commentary, locates truths about the contemporary Republican Party and our flawed electoral system that a more tendentious account never could. – Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com, Nov 7, 2013

Politicians are humans too?? lol

Watched this and the Romney doc- enjoyed both for the 'humanizing of my political enemies' aspect. Seeing Romney through the eyes of his children and crying for Rick Santorum has made me a better person, i believe.
But I also acknowledge that it is much much easier to do this now that the possibility of any of these people becoming president isn’t constantly terrifying me.

Frustration!

The comment below is completely ignorant! I hate how people cry about elections and they won't even get out and vote. Of course they don't matter anymore. When only 20 % if the population votes. How could it? Funny how the voting turn out is horrible. Yet, everyone complains about the results! If you want things to change... GET OFF THE COUCH AND VOTE YOUR NEXT ELECTION!!!!

Uhhh

Nobody actually thinks elections are real or meaningful anymore right? Who cares...
