Plot Summary

CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS, a breathtaking new documentary from the incomparable Werner Herzog (ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, GRIZZLY MAN) follows an exclusive expedition into the nearly inaccessible Chauvet Cave in France, home to the most ancient visual art known to have been created by man. A hit at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS is an unforgettable cinematic experience that provides a unique glimpse of pristine artwork dating back to human hands over 30,000 years ago -- almost twice as old as any previous discovery.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Herzog's voiceover is, as always, more entertaining than most film soundtracks. The film has a touch of that gray fuzz which still afflicts 3-D, but the Chauvet cave is a perfect candidate for such technology, because it stashes its secrets in a recess. – Anthony Lane, New Yorker, May 9, 2011

Fresh: Art history lessons don't get much better: "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" presents the world's oldest paintings captured by one of film's great visionaries. – Walter V. Addiego, San Francisco Chronicle, May 5, 2011

Fresh: What we come to love about Herzog's documentary is Herzog's love itself. – Wesley Morris, Boston Globe, May 5, 2011

Fresh: To call "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" a great movie isn't just an understatement, it's a wildly inaccurate way to describe an experience that, in its immersive sensory pleasures and climactic journey of discovery, more closely resembles an ecstatic trance. – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, May 6, 2011

Amazing Film by an unequaled director

To have a chance to go inside the Chauvet Cave (which only a handful of people have been allowed to do since thier discovery in 1994) is an incredible opportunity but to be brought there by the venerable Werner Herzog makes it a truely special experience. Don't miss it!

More hype than substance

I'm a huge documentary fan. Werner Herzog is Giant of the genre. I was very excited about this film, and utterly bored to watch it. Herzog is himself bigger than life and the press loves his bizarre personality. None of his crazy ways can save this film. I have no idea how this got such good reviews.

i cried.

utterly profound.
