Plot Summary

Wealthy teenager Charlie Bartlett (Anton Yelchin) is failing miserably at fitting in at a new public high school run by the world-weary Principal Gardner (Robert Downey, Jr.). As he begins to better understand the social hierarchy, Charlie's honest charm and likeability positions him as the resident "psychiatrist" dishing out advice, and the occasional prescription, to his fellow students in need. Along the way, he decides to take some of his own advice, thus wielding a witty dark comedy about the angst-filled years before college.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Two decades after Ferris Bueller, a new smarty-pants seeks popularity in Charlie Bartlett. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Charlie Bartlett is a refreshingly entertaining character study that refuses to dumb down its youthful cast or bury their concerns in service of a catchy soundtrack. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: [Director] Poll never picks a tone to stick with, so the movie is neither quite naturalistic nor stylized enough, and Charlie's character vacillates between charming-soulful and creepy-weird. – Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times, Oct 18, 2008

Fresh: An exuberant, unexpectedly smart comedy about the fraught give-and-take between kids and grown-ups. – Wesley Morris, Boston Globe, Nov 24, 2011

simply phenomenal

itunes says to keep it short and simple so here it is in a nutshell. 1. this is a must see movie. it is phenominally made and is a wonderful story. 2. the actors are magnificent. robert downey jr. is always great and anton yelchin plays the role of pharmecutical dealing charlie bartlett incredibly well. this is the new Ferris Beuller and is bound to become a classic. a MUST SEE for all, i highley recomend this. one of the best films i've seen in a while.

Excellent!

I had a fight with a friend (a film major) of mine over this movie. I explained to him that the reason why I loved this movie, mostly, was because of Charlie's relationship with his parents. He's a teenage kid dealing with a disfunctional family (a father that doesn't live home for a big reason, a "lost" mother that doesn't know how to raise a teenage kid). His status and wealth separates him from most kids his age, and he still finds a way to reach all of them. His crush's father gives him trouble, and he still manages to mantain a positive attitude towards him. The school bully makes fun of him, but Charlie finds a way to work things out. Charlie's an outcast, and aren't we all in high school at one point or another? This movie makes you feel proud of those that fight, learn, grow and help others; people, like you and me, that have to find ways to adapt and reach those around us. I highly recommend this movie! Ps. The soundtrack is worth purchasing, it was the first thing i did after seeing the movie.

Wonderous :]

“Charlie Bartlett” is one of my favorite movies ever. I saw it in theaters and just fell in love with it. It’s like… “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” for the new millennium. The acting is wonderful, the characters are hysterical, the soundtrack isn’t half-bad, and it’s a story that everyone can relate to, regardless of whether or nor you’ve participated in drug deals occurring in one of the most disgusting boys bathrooms I think I have ever seen in a film. I want to buy this film I love it so much, and there’s only been a handful of films I can say this about. If you really love this movie, I also recommend “Wriscutters: A Love Story” and “Everything Is Illuminated.”
