Plot Summary
When his late mother appears in a vision and tells him to go to Bucharest, Charlie Countryman immediately boards a plane across the Atlantic. A chance encounter with an ailing passenger leads Charlie to Gabi, a Romanian beauty, changing the course of his entire trip. As he falls head-over-heels in love with Gabi, he realizes that her dark past is riddled with dangerous baggage: namely her gangster ex-husband who has no intention of letting Gabi go. Determined to protect her, Charlie enters into a hallucinatory underworld filled with violence and, strangely enough, love.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: This catastrophe of a movie zigzags drunkenly between action-adventure and surreal comedy with some magical realism slopped over it like ketchup.
Rotten: A profoundly unnecessary movie.
Rotten: Pulpy dross of surpassing dumbness, "Charlie Countryman" takes the blender approach to mixing dark adventure, doofus comedy and pie-eyed romance, but forgets to put the lid on when pulsed.
Rotten: Charlie Countryman is an ode to an ideal no one over 16 actually believes.

Well Well
Having seen the average reviews for this film has made me totally lose hope in metacritic, rotten tomato's, imdb, etc...I do not understand why people are not liking this movie, I just don't. I suppose, that if the viewer isn't searching for somthing, anything, that this movie isn't going to make much sense. If you think you know and are enough, and don't need to search, that is fine. I for one, will always be looking around every corner, wondering what will come next. I'm glad I looked around this. one.
Another film that demonstrates how useless film critics are for most of us...
I watch a LOT of films. I’ve exceeded 2000 hours on my projector lamp in less than 8 months. So, I’ve seen quite a few movies, and have suffered through some films that were, according to "film critics", genre-defining films that weren’t to be missed; only to be left both disappointed and wanting.
I rented this film expecting typical mediocrity, but was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed it. This doesn’t happen very often, which prompted me to share some comments on my thoughts regarding this film. The premise sounds familiar: After experiencing a traumatic life event, a young man travels abroad to search for the answers of life. However, the film’s portrayal of this premise is both completely unexpected and seemingly plausible. I was astonished to read some other comments that described this movie as an “experience", with suggestions to watch late at night, after a few drinks, etc, because that’s exactly how I viewed the film. With a close family member dying of terminal cancer, I had arrived home from the hospital around 11:00 PM, completely exhausted and desperately seeking an escape from my situation, an escape this film provided in spades. I was very surprised that others who commented on this film shared my perspective so closely.
Further, I too share the frustration of others on how harshly this film has been reviewed, as it’s actually quite good. The plot is unpredictable and some of the scenes have a gently soothing, surreal feel to them. The combination of excellent photography and the excellent score provided by Christophe Beck provided a comfortable, but difficult to describe feeling of not just watching a film, but actually being there. Many scenes are somewhat reminiscent to the downtown Tokyo scenes in "Lost in Translation”, even though this is a very different film. The two films do share the “fish out of water” premise, but neither this premise or the surreality is over done or poorly presented.
Shia LeBeouf does very well in what I feel is easily his most dramatic role. Mads Mikkelsen and Rachel Evan Wood also provide excellent performances. Considering this, I simply can’t understand the vitriol expressed in some of the reviews I’ve read? I didn’t sense any comedic intent and the brief action scenes are integral to the plot of the film and very well done.
In summary, I’d encourage anyone who’s had their fill of comic book super hero action films and are seeking something a bit more profound to lose one’s self in. I think most will agree that when viewed with expectations of watching a film that offers something a little different, this film is far more entertaining than the film critics suggest.
Movie/experience
This was a great film, but if you want to experience this film, stay up late on a night when you know you can't....have a few drinks (your choice of corse) then watch this movie...and it almost feels like it just happened to you or to someone you might know.
