Plot Summary

Charlotte Gray's World War II assignment could be the first of many. Or her fatal last. The people she meets could be friends or insidious traitors. Trained to be an undercover courier for England, Charlotte straps on a parachute and falls from the sky into Vichy France. There she will assist the French Resistance in its defiance of Nazi occupation. Only one of three couriers will return home. Cate Blanchett enthralls as Charlotte, who goes behind enemy lines while keeping secret her personal mission to find her lover, an RAF pilot downed over France.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Blanchett is an extraordinary actress, and she does what she can to flesh out the material. But Charlotte is one of the least active underground operatives in movie history. – Paul Tatara, CNN.com, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Sometimes war is predictable hell. – Rita Kempley, Washington Post, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: This is a movie that looks great, is well-acted, and tells a story that you can't believe for a moment. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: The pace is so lethargic and the focus so diffuse that it's hard to get a fix on Charlotte beyond needless glamorization. – Bruce Westbrook, Houston Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Wonderful

I have to say I'm confused by the Rotten Tomato score on this film. I am very picky and not easily impressed (I am a film maker myself) and both my wife and I really loved this film. Cate Blanchett is powerful and captivating in every scene. We were truly blown away by her. Additionally, the cinematography is breath-taking. When it was over, I felt stunned that I hadn't heard of this film before, and I'm totally shocked it has a negative score on Rotten Tomatoes. But more and more I'm finding that the 'official' movie critics at the big papers (NY Times, LA Times, USA Today, etc) are really not a reliable reference for whether or not I'm going to love a film. I would highly recommend Charlotte Gray, especially because of Blanchett's flawless performance (so nuanced, very few actors have that kind of charisma and presence, she steals a scene without even speaking a line) and the cinematography is superb.

It's worth taking the chance on this film! Don't listen to the official 'critics'.

Good movie

Je vois ce film dans ma classe de francais. J'aime beaucoup parce que le fin c'est magnifique!

Wow

Beautiful cinematography, and romantic depiction of French country side during Nazi occupation. Cate Blanchett was mesmorizing, beautiful, and captivating. The story was good but a little slow at times. A great epic drama to rent. Over-all four out of five stars.
