Plot Summary

In pre-WWI England, a widowed, absent-minded, unsuccessful inventor spruces up a wrecked racing car--which develops the amazing ability to float on water and fly--and plans to take his two children, his girlfriend and the flying automobile on a magical adventure. When the bullying prince of a middle European nation tries to kidnap the auto and its inventor, he grabs the wrong guy and the wrong car. So the adventure becomes a rescue mission that takes the group and their wonderful car to a strange Oz-like world of castles and pirates, where nothing is as it seems. Based on the children's story by Ian Fleming.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A fast, dense, friendly children's musical, with something of the joys of singing together on a team bus on the way to a game. – Renata Adler, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang contains about the best two-hour children's movie you could hope for, with a marvelous magical auto and lots of adventure and a nutty old grandpa and a mean Baron and some funny dances and a couple of [scary] moments. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Ken Adam's sets are inventive, but the special effects are shoddy, the songs instantly forgettable, and the leisurely length an exquisite torture. – Tom Milne, Time Out, May 5, 2008

Fresh: The film is too long at well over two hours, but the effects are impressive for the time and the musical numbers zippy. – Neil Jeffries, Empire Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Pardon me for protruding!

This has been one of my faves since childhood, and I actually appreciate it more as I get older. It has so much of the same witty dialogue and tongue in cheek feel of the early (read: best) Bond flims, as it is of course from a story by Ian Fleming and produced by the great Cubby Broccoli. The scenery, acting, and even the songs (and I hate musicals) are just amazing. Do buy it - "toot sweet"!!

Classical

If you're the serious, mature type, then you're a scrooge and this movie isn't for you. But if you enjoy slightly cheesy but adorable fantasy stories, then you'll love this one. It's lovable and familiar characters along with a fantastical tale will warm your heart.

This movie Rocks

This was one of my favorite childhood movies. Unfortuantely, kids today are completely unware of this movie-- which is quite unfortunate. Buy this movie for your kids or just yourself! Good music and great fun. The end scene really amazed me as a kid. (Hint: castles and knights).
