Plot Summary

For over four years Bruce Weber photographed one subject: Peter Johnson. What began as a photographic journey to document Peter's transition from boyhood into manhood led to the making of the film Chop Suey. A deeply personal film, feeling very much like a film journal or a scrapbook, Chop Suey is homage to all things the filmmaker loves most. Mixing film, archival footage, still photography and a rich and expansive soundtrack boasting over 65 songs, Chop Suey is the third film in the trilogy, which begins with Backyard Movie.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Though undoubtedly a vanity project -- the music clearances alone must have cost much more than the film could ever hope to gross -- it functions pleasantly enough as an exercise in free association. – Dave Kehr, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: The most personal and accomplished of the several documentaries Weber has made over the years. – Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times, Feb 24, 2007

Fresh: A film of extraordinary beauty and singular vision. – Joe Mader, Hollywood Reporter, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Time and again ... words fail Weber. He's a loquacious but unilluminating host. – Dennis Lim, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010
