Plot Summary
As much about bleak isolation as it is about exaggerated colorful optimism, the long awaited feature film by The Flaming Lips is set in outer space on the surface of Mars. The double failures of a clunky old oxygen generator and an exotic, but finicky, gravity control pod have conspired to weaken the resolve and psychological judgment of the crew and the film's protagonist, Major Syrtis. This means he has horrific hallucinations that are centered around the artificial birth of the Christmas Baby. An alien super-being arrives and, with his otherworldly powers, fixes the oxygen generator, but it's the station's genius mechanic who fixes the gravity problem. And, in a way that crystallizes The Flaming Lips' philosophy, "It's magic and hard work that really gets the job done." Beware, it is a strange experience not meant for children, but for the inner child in all of us grown-ups.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Many rock bands have a moment when they flirt with cinema, but the best efforts are...endearingly ragged projects, destined for cult status. For the Oklahoma group the Flaming Lips, that movie is Christmas on Mars.
Fresh: This mostly black-and-white, dreamlike yuletide fable does possess its own dorky DIY charm.
Rotten: It's mainly pregnant with pauses that too frequently suck all the fun/oxygen out of each scene, like some art-film parody.
Rotten: Warmth and humor, Flaming Lips calling cards, are nowhere to be found.

Aquired Taste
The Flaming Lips have accomplished something extremely unique and special with Christmas On Mars. Sure, it's not your blockbuster hit, but it is the posterchild of indie, and it's quite brilliant for what it is. Watch it a few times, you'll catch things that are so subtile, it will blow your freaking mind. The Flaming Lips encourage you to....buy this film!
The best movie available from iTunes.
While there are some saying it was terrible, do not heed there words. The story progresses very slowly but everything about the movie is amazing. If you want to watch a man pull a space ship out of his head, or a marching band crush a baby, welcome. This is an indie film nirvana. If you know anything about Wayne Coyne you'll know this isn't him going " We'll make a movie?" Buy it. Watch it. Show all of your freinds.
