Plot Summary

A film about film, Cinematographer Style pays homage to the artists who transform ideas into images. It sets out to answer the essential questions: What is a cinematographer? What makes style? Is it inspiration, innovation, experience? With 110 masterfully edited interviews of celebrated cinematographers from around the world, Cinematographer Style creates a collective narrative about the process and progress of filmmaking. The distinguished group of artists including Vittorio Storaro, ASC, AIC (Apocalypse Now), Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC (No Country for Old Men), and Gordon Willis ASC (The Godfather) discuss their various backgrounds, their dreams and struggles, and, most importantly, the passion they have for their craft. Venturing further into the psyche of each cinematographer, this documentary traces how style and technique evolve, culminating in the new technological possibilities and pitfalls of the future. In the end, these diverse artists are united by one thing: a love of the moving image. A visually striking and beautifully lit film, Cinematographer Style celebrates the passion, dedication, and art of the men and women who make movies look the way they do.

Talking heads!!!

This is a visual subject and there is not one shot from any movie these DP's are speaking about!! 110 interviews!!! So many DP's interviewed they take 15 min just telling there names! When they talk about how they got into the business, there are so many we only get a short superficial answer! They should have focused on only 20 or 30. i was looking for something that would teach me about lighting, did not find it here! only one DP (probably at his insistence) showed what changing lights actually looks like as he controls the lighting on his own interview but it is so brief you don't get much out of it. What a waist of time with all this talent being interviewed Jon Fauer could not put them on a set and show them actually lighting something or show clips from there movies.
Waist of time!

Looks like the directors friends lined up there reviews here. i bought this movie based on the reviews, know one mentions the obvious flaws in this documentary so misleading they should be ashamed!

Hollywood celebrating itself

This is Hollywood celebrating itself, nothing else. As such, the movie will bore a general audience stiff. I don't know how many dozens of cinematographers ("I am a cinematographer -- NOT a director of photography!") were interviewed, and quite honestly, who cares? The large number of interviewees does not even enhance the movie. All you get is one sound bite after another. Sure, the light during the interview sessions is beautiful, but this is about the only thing that you'll see as there is nothing else but an endless string of interviews that are not even particularly revealing. Think about it as James Lipton interviewing himself, 110 times! My verdict: boring, boring, boring -- and I am saying that even though I AM a film maker!

Cinematographer Style

Cinematographer Style will give you the chance to see and understand the part of a film that doesn't appear on the screen. The pure insights given by one hundred and ten of the worlds top cinematographers show how no artist is the same. The interviews are portrayed in a calm sophisticated manner, quite appropriate for the complex art of cinematography. A definite buy and enjoy.
