Plot Summary

Where does legitimate concern end and paranoia begin? A man finds himself walking that fine line in this tense independent drama. Terry Allen (Peter Krause) is an accountant who lives a seemingly ordinary life until he loses his job. Unable to buy the new house he was hoping to get for his fiancée, Marla (Kari Matchett), Terry spends most of time in his apartment, looking for job leads, sending out resumés, and feeling increasingly powerless. As Terry watches more and more stories about the war on terror on cable news channels, he begins developing an intense suspicion of his new neighbor Gabe Hassan (Khaled Abol Naga), an Arab exchange student. Terry notices Gabe keeps late hours, takes out his trash in the middle of the night, and has a lot of visitors of Middle Eastern descent dropping by his flat, and slowly Terry becomes convinced Gabe is involved in terrorist activities. Terry visits Tom Hillary (Richard Schiff), an FBI agent, and tells him about Gabe and his habits; Tom doesn't pay much attention to what Terry has to say, and convinced danger lurks, he decides to take the law into his own hands. Civic Duty received its world premiere at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The vivid sense of time and place is the best thing about the initially promising, ultimately irritating psychological thriller Civic Duty. – Matt Zoller Seitz, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: With nowhere for any of the characters to go, literally, the story becomes a tendentious exercise in belaboring a point. – Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times, Sep 20, 2007

Fresh: Though Civic Duty seems to be a study in paranoid psychosis, it has just enough ambiguity to make you wonder if it isn't something else. You'll still be wondering when it's all over. – Jack Mathews, New York Daily News, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Civic Duty sends you home depressed, but at least it makes you think. It's a breed of film that's rare to find on the summer movie slate. – Lisa Rose, Newark Star-Ledger, Jun 24, 2010

Would you loose everything to save those you don't know??

Courages man looses everything so save people he dosen't know....but what if everything you did just wasn't good enough?? Great story that makes you look inside yourself.

Phenominal Camera Work

This movie was as much art-ish as it was a drama. The director used creative camera angles and transitions to get from scene to scene or just...idk impress, entertain, show off his amasing talent??? The best camera work ive ever seen in a movie. Great acting and plot, but PHENOMINAL camera work.

Camera Work Was fun, Movie was Candy Coated.

I understad why you would like the camera work in this film but the "suprise" ending, well, it isn't even close to realism. It does not portray terrorists and is just another attempt at the alert system bs.
