The Moodies In Their Own Words
Music stays very deliberately in the background of this terrific film. Moody Blues:Classic Artists is one of the best and most comprehensive rock documentaries I've ever seen. It is comprised of very thoughtful, generous and contemplative interviews with the members of the Moody Blues, their producers and backup players, and some surprising input from a few contemporaries like Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, and Eric Burden of the Animals. As a fan of the Moodies, I was expecting more music, but you only catch glimmers of it in the background, as this is film not about the music, but about how the band came about. Afterwards, I was not at all disappointed by the lack of music - after all I have the albums and have seen many concert videos. What I have never had is what this film offers. The interviews are intimate and revealing in ways modern celebrities seldom are. There are wonderful anecdotes about the early days of the band, brief but pointed discussions of the band's process in the studio and the creative process, a bit about the personal dynamics of the band, and many, many clues as to just why this band has lasted for 40 years. If you are a fan, you'll enjoy meeting the boys, up close and personal. If you are a musician, even one who doesn't know or like the Moody Blues, you should watch this film because it deals with the dynamics of creating a band, a sound, and a business that can survive.
Great history .
Fabulous insight into the history of the British Invasion beginning. Articulate and informative dialogue from all of the Moodys. Wonderful to see and hear so much of Mike Pinder. I saw the very early Moody Blues, with Denny Laine, at the Brooklyn Fox Theatre in 1964. Met Justin and had a great chat with John Lodge at the Moody Bluegrass show in Nashville. Keep it going guys. The story of how the Beatles came up with "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" line is hilarious. Doug Klein
Well worth it
If you like the Moody Blues, you'll love this movie. As a long time (40 years), serious fan, I was delighted with this. Excellent interviews about things I never knew before. Even if you're not a huge fan of the band, much history of classic rock era is covered and is fascinating.
