Plot Summary

Travelling along the Pacific North West coastline from LA to Vancouver, the film showcases the pioneers of West Coast Modernist Architecture, and the homes that have become their legacies. This relaxed journey takes us across three generations of Modernist architecture, all finding beauty in their own times, and all taking us back to the basics of true living. A sense of place, light and a deep connection to the earth. Interviewed in Coast Modern are some of the most respected names in architecture, including James Steele, Ray Kappe, Hernik Bull, Pierluigi Serraino, John Cava, Barbara Bestor and Dion Neutra, son of the legendary Richard Neutra.

A beautiful film that's over much too fast

I took four pages of notes from this master course, I will be watching it again and again. Thank you - I hope there's a part two.

Modern Documentary

For those who have watched Visual Acoustics among other documentaries on architecture you will find this to be informative, beautifully art directed and inspiring. There isn't a lot of new information or insights presented and covers many of the same modern architecture territory as those films that have come before it but it is presented in a easy to follow and visually rich story.

Excellent

Although I have an appreciation for architecture and design, I'm no expert so I was a little worried this film might bore me. Not so. It's absolutely fantastic! This movie gives the non-architect a deeper understanding of what modern architecture is, why it exists, and why it matters. Everyone in the film was so well spoken and there were so many beautiful dwellings and landscapes. I agree with the previous reviewer - I wished the film was longer…I didn't want it to end.
