Plot Summary
Sonny Mann, (Timothy Olyphant), an ex-con returning home from prison, creates a new dynamic for both friends and enemies with his arrival. The local power broker, Fred Vance (William Forsythe), wants Sonny back into his shady world. Sonny only wants money due, as his long suppressed desire for Ann (Sarah Wynter), now married to his best friend and local sheriff Dave Lockhart (Josh Brolin), puts at risk life's delicate balance of family and community. Passion and revenge threaten to overtake all as Sonny's anger careens dangerously out of control, leading to an explosive confrontation, and finally to a surprising resolution. Director, Victor Nunez (Ruby In Paradise, Ulee's Gold) maintains his striking visual style, detailed character study, and uncanny ability to garner the bravest performances from the most promising contemporary actors in IFC's indie drama.

Rotten: Enough of the ingredients for a sultry downscale noir are in place in Coastlines, that once the film turns perversely goody-good, it leaves you feeling vaguely disgruntled.
Fresh: It's a heartfelt movie that could have used a zigzaggier undercurrent, though Olyphant, in the sort of role that Paul Newman used to swagger through, has a star's easy command.
Rotten: Sometimes it's best to leave those old scripts in the trunk, a view borne out by Coastlines,a melodramatic step backward for writer-director Victor Nunez after his last two pictures.
Fresh: The talent is still there, the film better than most. It just needs less crime, more love.

As usual, Olyphant is understated and brilliant!!!
I recently became a fan of Timothy Olyphant after watching the new series "Justified", one of the best programs on TV. Fortunately, he does not disappoint in "Coastlines" - not one little bit. Writer and director, Victor Nunez manages to confer a depth of character upon the characters that leaves us really caring what happens to them. Even the children have personas that make them memorable. The music Nunez allows for this movies is so very apt to the spiritual threads throughout. The storyline is infused with Jazz, Blues, Zydego and the movie ends on the laid back, go-with-the-flow of Lynyrd Skynyrd. So apropos! While some have criticized Dave's (Josh Brolin) kindness to Sonny after he misappropriates certain family valuables, so to speak, I came away with a totally different perspective. I grew up in churches that taught, repeatedly, the concept of unconditional love, yet not often have I witnessed it. The camaraderie that Sonny, Dave and Anne had formed over so many years was closer than blood. Indeed, there had to be rules and boundaries, but forgiveness, upon remorse, was a given. Oh yes, the good guys are flawed, yet they're heading in the right direction and the bad guys, well they're heading in the correct direction. Love it!
