Plot Summary

"Crime is the disease. Meet the cure." First came Rocky, then he was Rambo, and now Sylvester Stallone ("The Specialist," "Cliffhanger," "Tango & Cash") plays his toughest character yet as a police officer dirtier than Harry, who must protect a beautiful witness from a cult of serial killers. Explosive action from the director of "Rambo: First Blood Part II."

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The film trades on the same technique used by books that attack pornography by printing examples of the dirty pictures. Cobra pretends to be against the wanton violence of a disintegrating society, but it's really the apotheosis of that violence. – Nina Darnton, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: It's fast-paced and full of gaudy action, yet it's thoroughly unsatisfying, largely because it's so lazy. – Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: The body count is only somewhere in the high eighties -- and most of these are simply gunned down with a deplorable lack of invention. – Time Out, May 6, 2008

Rotten: An adequate no-brainer that does little to distinguish itself from the rest of Sly's action man back catalogue. – Film4, Jun 24, 2010

The Best Movie Ever Made

Cobra represents the pinicale of American Cinema. A sublime journey through the tortured the psyche of a Cop who pays by his own rules. If Arnold Schwarzanegger's Comando is the Citizen Kane of the 80's then Cobra is surely the Casablanca, with enduring lines of dialouge that have etched themselves into the popular culture: "Your the Diesease and I'm the Cure," "Fish, Fish and Rice." and "Get Ot of Here!" The cinematography is gorgeous the lens capturing the fine details of the many nonsequitous gasoline explosions and has a seemlingly limtless capacity, to commemorate the ceasless piling of unknown bodies. Surely the most important film of the 1980's- possibly ever. Watch it back to back with Commando for an afternoon of blood thirst bliss.

Classic Stallone

This is not Sly's best picture, but it is certainly one of his most noteworthy roles in a film. The film was initially intended to kickstart a third series of films for him to star in (next to Rocky and Rambo), but such never came to pass. Its still a fun film, and seeing Stallone as a hard boiled cop is actually quite intriguing. Overall, not bad stuff.
