Plot Summary
At a time when the world is rethinking its drug policies large and small, one state rises to the forefront. Once a pioneer in legalizing medical marijuana, the state of Montana may now become the first to repeal its medical marijuana law. Set against the sweeping vistas of the Rockies, the steamy lamplight of marijuana grow houses, and the bustling halls of the State Capitol, Code of the West follows the political process of marijuana policy reform – and the recent federal crackdown on medical marijuana growers across the country. This is the story of what happens when politics fail, emotions run high and communities pay the price.

Beautiful and heartfelt
As a professor and faculty advisor of a chapter of Students for Sensible Drug Policy, I have used this film both in the classroom and as an event for our student club. The film shows the political process of a culture war, by following individuals on both sides of an issue. It is appropriate for any course about political movements, culture, moral crusaders, or drug policy. It is also beautiful, thoughtful, and stays engaging by following interesting individuals. Highly recommend it for any audience! It is extremely timely and important to what is happening in the US around drug policy. It is inspiring and shows how far we still have to go to enact drug policy reforms.
Heartbreaking
This gorgeous documentary highlights both the complexity of the debate over drug policy in this country and the bluntness of the instrument of the criminal law. It manages to be both thoughtful and urgent.
