Plot Summary

"Codependent.." follows the adventures of three lesbian space aliens, sent to Earth to look for love in order to save their planet. Landing in New York's East Village, where their bald heads and flight suits go unnoticed by jaded New Yorkers, Zoinx, the most robotic of the aliens, soon gets involved with Jane, a shy stationery store clerk who is unaware that she is dating an alien. Meanwhile, two government agents, or "Men in Black" are closely tracking Jane and the aliens while harboring their own secrets, in this hilarious mash-up of a New York city romantic comedy and sci-fi B-movie spoof.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Ed Wood would have been proud. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Jan 5, 2012

Fresh: Olnek's sensibility is singular, and the work of the cast -- notably the sweetfaced Haas and the hilariously robotic Ziegler -- make for a movie that seeks, and earns, affection. – John Anderson, Variety, Oct 1, 2013

Fresh: Writer-director Olnek... deftly parodies the myriad tropes of low-budget sci-fi with obvious glee, from the alien's monotonal speech to wobbly camera-handling and cheesy special effects. – Justin Lowe, Hollywood Reporter, Oct 1, 2013

Fresh: The played-out scenarios in Olnek's first feature, such as Jane's sessions with her therapist, are soon outnumbered by inspired silliness, like tears shed over a revolving dessert tray in a diner. – Melissa Anderson, Village Voice, Jan 3, 2012

A joy to watch!

A New York love story that pays homage to Ed Wood, with an extra dash of John Waters. I first saw this film at a film festival, where it was all the buzz. Lisa Haas has the uncanny ability to be unique, quirky, and utterly sincere. A sheer delight. Destined to become a cult classic, this sweet and funny film touches its audience in all the right places.

Funny, original, unexpectedly poignant

Don't let the title fool you, this is the realest romance/comedy around. The characters are lovable and hilarious. The premise of the movie is smart and original. Plus, the special effects are adorable without being overly-played. I LOVE that flying saucer.

Great Film !

Madeleine Olnek’s “Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same” is a wonderfully original and funny film. A tribute to all who have felt out of step with all that is going on around them.
